Take care of yourself, so you have space to care for others

Self care first
Self care, what does it mean to you?

Everyone of us wear many hats in our life. Some of us are a mum, a wife, a daughter, a caregiver, an employee, a breadwinner and the list goes on. We often find ourselves lost in the list, and "burnout" at the end of the day. Often, it was too late when we realize that we are "burnout", and we find ourselves fallen into the trap of depression, feeling disconnected, stressed and anxious about the future.

Why is self care important?

Think about the safety speech you hear every time you’re on a plane. If you’re traveling with other people who might need your help in case of an emergency, the flight attendants tell you to be sure to secure your own oxygen mask before tending to those in your care. Why? Because if you help others without ensuring your own safety first, you might pass out.

The same logic can be applied to your everyday life. When you practice self-care physically, emotionally and mentally, you become better able to pursue your goals and enrich the lives of the people around you. You’re able to focus on the good in life, increase your resilience and see light where you used to see darkness.

Self-care is critical to our mental health and emotional well-being. When you prioritize yourself, you not only ensure you are the best “you” possible, but you also reinvigorate yourself. You have more energy and joy to give in other areas of your life. Then you can make a positive impact in your world.

Some easy self care tips:
  1. Work toward acceptance (of self, others, and your situation).
  2. Practice deep breathing exercises, mediation or yoga.
  3. Try something new.
  4. Spend time outdoors.
  5. Spend time with family or close friends.
  6. Organize your home.
  7. Listen to your favorite music.
  8. Read your favorite book.
  9. Establish a regular sleep routine.
  10. Take a social media "detox".
  11. Wear clothes that make you feel good.
  12. Pamper yourself (put on some lotion, get a haircut, do a foot bath, etc.)

Remember, you need to care for yourself today, so that you can care for others later.
